GeoCities Shrine

GeoCities was one of the first places on the internet where ordinary people could build their own little homes online. It wasn’t polished or corporate. It wasn’t curated or optimized. It was messy, colorful, personal, and full of heart. Every page felt like stepping into someone’s bedroom, decorated with whatever they loved most. It was the early web at its most human.

I definitely had a GeoCities site back in the day. I remember learning just enough HTML to make pages full of anime images, sparkly text, and wallpapers I made myself in early Photoshop. I stored all my gifs on Photobucket and felt so proud every time I figured out how to make something blink or glow. Like so much of the old internet, all of it is lost now, but the feeling remains.

There was a whole phase on GeoCities where everyone was making digital snowglobes. I somehow missed it at the time, but looking back, it was everywhere. Little pixel globes filled with glitter, characters, tiny scenes, and falling snow. They were charming and completely unnecessary, which made them perfect. I sometimes wish I had made one myself.
